Problem Foods

Eating proper foods, minimizing sugar intake, and getting enough sleep help ensure successful dental orthodontic treatment. Your braces are precise appliances that can easily be damaged without proper care. Some soft and sticky foods promote tooth decay and can loosen or dislodge braces. Use common sense when choosing foods, and don’t chew on hard objects, like pens and pencils. Cook or cut fruits and vegetables to make them easier to chew.

Forbidden Hard Foods:

  • Hard Candy
  • Corn Chips
  • Popcorn
  • Jerky
  • Ice
  • Nuts
  • Pizza Crust
  • Corn on the Cob

Forbidden Soft Foods:

  • Gum (especially bubble gum)
  • Sticky Candy, like Starbursts, Tootsie Rolls, gummy bears, caramels, and taffy
